Statement: No scientific consensus on GMO safety

As scientists, physicians, academics, and experts from disciplines relevant to the scientific, legal, social and safety assessment aspects of genetically modified organisms (GMOs),[1] we strongly reject claims by GM seed developers and some scientists, commentators, and journalists that there is a “scientific consensus” on GMO safety[2] [3] [4] and that the debate on this topic is “over”.[5]

We feel compelled to issue this statement because the claimed consensus on GMO safety does not exist. The claim that it does exist is misleading and misrepresents the currently available scientific evidence and the broad diversity of opinion among scientists on this issue. Moreover, the claim encourages a climate of complacency that could lead to a lack of regulatory and scientific rigour and appropriate caution, potentially endangering the health of humans, animals, and the environment.

Science and society do not proceed on the basis of a constructed consensus, as current knowledge is always open to well-founded challenge and disagreement. We endorse the need for further independent scientific inquiry and informed public discussion on GM product safety and urge GM proponents to do the same.

México: Organizaciones ciudadanas piden prohibición del endosulfán

Organizaciones ciudadanas entregarán hoy una petición para cancelar el registro del insecticida endosulfán a las autoridades de la Comisión Federal de Protección contra Riesgos Sanitarios (COFEPRIS) pues representa un peligro para la salud y el medio ambiente. De igual modo solicitan a la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores y secretaría del Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (Semarnat), se apoye la recomendación del Comité de Expertos de Naciones Unidas para la prohibición mundial de este peligroso insecticida en la próxima reunión del Convenio de Estocolmo sobre Contaminantes Orgánicos Persistentes que se realizara del 25 al 29 de abril del 2011 en Ginebra, Suiza.

This report explores the impact of the adoption of genetically engineered (GE) corn, soybean, and cotton on pesticide use in the United States, drawing principally on data from the United States Department of Agriculture. The most striking finding is that GE crops have been responsible for an increase of 383 million pounds of herbicide use in the U.S. over the first 13 years of commercial use of GE crops (1996- 2008).
