Symposium “Feeding Europe with fewer pesticides”

By November 26th 2014 the European Commission has to present its first report on the implementation of the EU Directive on Sustainable Use of Pesticides (EC/128/2009) to the European Parliament and the Council.

At the symposium, experts will present ways forward to significantly reduce pesticides use in European agriculture. Farmers, scientists, industries, NGOs and retailers will share their experience on how to successfully change agricultural practices by applying non-chemical alternatives to pest management.
Participants will also discuss with the European Commission how to ensure an effective and timely implementation of the Sustainable Use of Pesticides Directive (SUDP) and how the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) could help in doing so.
Pesticides can have harmful effects, including chronic or long-term disorders, which are of particular concern in the case of children, the elderly and farm workers regularly exposed to these substances. Pesticides are also responsible for environmental degradation and biodiversity loss, such as in the case of bees and other pollinators, due to air, water and soil contamination.
The programme of the symposium is attached to this email.
